New Study Finds Marijuana To Be Effective Against Depression
Research has suggested that cannabis may be a promising
therapeutic option for a number of different conditions of
physical and mental health, from
PTSD
to
chronic pain
. A study published this week suggests that
depression can be added to the list.

Neuroscientists at the University of Buffalo Research
Institute on Addictions found that endocannabinoids –
chemicals in the brain that activate the same receptors as
THC, an active compound in marijuana -. They can be useful in
the treatment of depression resulting from chronic stress

In rat studies, researchers found that chronic stress reduces
the production of endocannabinoids, which affect our
cognition, emotion and behavior, and they have been
associated with feelings of pain and reduced anxiety,
increased appetite and general feeling of wellbeing. The body
naturally produces these compounds, which are similar to the
chemicals in cannabis. Reduction of production
endocannabinoid may be one reason that chronic stress is

major risk factor
in the development of depression.

Then, the research team cannabinoids marijuana rats were
administered, found an effective way to restore levels
endocannabinoids in the brain -. Possibly, thereby relieving
some of the symptoms of depression

“The use of compounds derived from cannabis – marijuana – to
restore the normal function of endocannabinoids could help
stabilize moods and relieve depression, “
lead researcher Dr. Samir Haj-Dahmane in a news release from
the university

.
Recent research on effect of marijuana on symptoms of
posttraumatic stress disorder further strengthens-traumatic
neuroscientific findings Buffalo ‘, since both disorders
involve the way the brain responds to stress. A study

published last year in the journal
Neuropsychopharmacology
, for example, found synthetic
cannabinoids trigger changes in the brain centers associated
with traumatic memories in rats, preventing some of the
behavioral and physiological symptoms of stress
posttraumatic. Other
study published last year
found that patients who smoked
cannabis experienced a 75 percent reduction in symptoms of
PTSD.

However, it is important to note that the relationship
between marijuana and depression is complex. Some research
has suggested that regular marijuana smokers and heavy are in
a
increased risk of depression
, although it has not
established a causal relationship between cannabis use and
depression. Further studies are needed to determine whether,
and how, marijuana could be used in a clinical setting for
patients with depression.
