Thirikadugam Health Benefits & Medicinal Use: Homemade Cough Syrup

Sukku (dried ginger),
milagu (pepper) and thippili (long pepper) is thirikadugam
called in Tamil. The combination of these three ingredients
is so highly effective that is used to treat many diseases
and is popularly called thirikadugam in Tamil. In India, we
have plenty of herbal powders that are marketed for cough and
eliminating phlegm, which are actually quite effective. Last
week, when I was talking to my sister, she mentioned that she
makes her own powder herbal now she said it was exactly like
the store bought powdered herbal cough and cold that had used
before. He added that it was very, very effective in removing
phlegm. When the ingredients mentioned, I realized that she
was mentioning thirikadugam. Thirikadugam is a final drug
that treats a wide variety of diseases, depending on how it
is used. Thirikadugam can be used for the treatment of cold
related head aches, sinus problems, in fact, also it used to
treat problems related to indigestion too. I had forgotten to
mention thirikadugam blog. I think the main problem of many
readers of this blog face is not able to find fresh herbs
mentioned in the remedy. So I was thinking I should publish
more remedies in which the ingredients can be easily obtained
and can be stored for a long time as thirikadugam. This dust
once done can be stored in an airtight box for future use and
once you start using this mixture, I’m sure you will use
again and again. Even I love this combination, it is no
wonder our elders have both praised thirikadugam. To make the
powder, dry Sukku sun, milagu, thippili in until crisp and
finely powder in a mixing bowl. To make the decoction, add
about half a teaspoon of powder to a cup of water. This
measurement was my sister gave me, but if it is very hot or
if you are giving children, reduce the amount of dust. This
herbal decoction can also be taken when it is lethargic, has
a severe physical pain or general ill or sick.

.

Method:
1. Measure peppercorns, long pepper and dried ginger in a
bowl and sun dried until crisp. The weight of the three
ingredients should be approximately equal. You do not have to
dry in the sun for a long time, only 15 to 20 minutes in the
sunlight would too.

2. Powder as finely as possible in a dry mixer and do not
have to sift it.

4. To make the decoction, boil around a cup of water along
with 1/2 teaspoon of the powder mixture herbal.

5. Boil for a few minutes, it turns off and tension. The
longer it boils, the spicier it will get and if it is boiled
for too long, have a bitter taste. If you like to sweeten,
sweetening it with candy suggest palm. This mixture can be
taken daily twice until you get good relief.

NOTES:

  • Sun drying makes it easier to finely grind the
    ingredients.
  • The mixture must not be too thin, a little roughness is
    acceptable.
  • As I mentioned before, the amount of powder to be mixed
    depends on the age.
  • This powder can be given to young children from age 2 to
    3 years and up.
  • For young children, less than 1/4 teaspoon will be more
than enough. If children refuse to drink, you can sweeten
    with honey as well.
  • This powder can be made and stored in the refrigerator
    for up to 6 months.
  • This powder can be used for all cold-related problems.
  • This same remedy can be used to treat indigestion.
