Thirikadugam Health Benefits & Medicinal Use: Homemade Cough Syrup

Sukku (dried ginger),
milagu (pepper) and thippili (long pepper) is thirikadugam
called in Tamil. The combination of these three ingredients
is so highly effective that is used to treat many diseases
and is popularly called thirikadugam in Tamil. In India, we
have plenty of herbal powders that are marketed for cough and
eliminating phlegm, which are actually quite effective. Last
week, when I was talking to my sister, she mentioned that she
makes her own powder herbal now she said it was exactly like
the store bought powdered herbal cough and cold that had used
before. He added that it was very, very effective in removing
phlegm. When the ingredients mentioned, I realized that she
was mentioning thirikadugam. Thirikadugam is a final drug
that treats a wide variety of diseases, depending on how it
is used. Thirikadugam can be used for the treatment of cold
related head aches, sinus problems, in fact, also it used to
treat problems related to indigestion too. I had forgotten to

wonder our elders have both praised thirikadugam. To make the
powder, dry Sukku sun, milagu, thippili in until crisp and
finely powder in a mixing bowl. To make the decoction, add
about half a teaspoon of powder to a cup of water. This
measurement was my sister gave me, but if it is very hot or
if you are giving children, reduce the amount of dust. This
herbal decoction can also be taken when it is lethargic, has
a severe physical pain or general ill or sick.


1. Measure peppercorns, long pepper and dried ginger in a
bowl and sun dried until crisp. The weight of the three
ingredients should be approximately equal. You do not have to
dry in the sun for a long time, only 15 to 20 minutes in the
