Everyone goes through stages of anxiety and depression in their lifetime. Feeling like this during times when we have a lot on our plates is usual. Losing a loved one or finding yourself unemployed can lead to emotions of sadness, pain, worry and hopelessness.
Usually when someone mentions anxiety or depression we think of something serious but it’s not always the case. When a person is in a state of anxiety they might feel anxious, nervous and apprehensive. This is the body’s natural way of warning us that something is not right.
Of course these normal reactions to stressors can be as trivial as being stuck in a traffic jam or receiving a monthly phone bill. It’s when we experience anxiety and depression everyday that we should take note.
Sufferers of depression experience a constant lull of energy combined with feelings of sadness and hopelessness. They feel like a cloud of grey is always upon them and they can’t seem to shake thoughts of gloom. In addition, there have been links to heart disease, stroke and diabetes. People with depression are also more likely to commit suicide.
There are people who suffer from both anxiety and depression. Shockingly, depression and anxiety disorders combined affect more than 20% of the adult population. Moreover, half of those people are suffering at a degree that needs support.
Available are various therapies and treatments. Many people however, do not seek support or help when they need it the most. This can be down to a number of reasons; some people are too embarrassed or even afraid to seek help; there are those that feel that there’s nothing to be done about their condition; and some have simply have given up on finding help.
It’s not uncommon for people to develop both depression and an anxiety disorder. In fact half of people with clinical depression suffer from an anxiety disorder. More commonly Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which alone affects 5% of the population. Social phobia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Panic Disorder are also quite common.
Anxiety and depression can develop late in adulthood. Experiencing emotional trauma and long term stress are possible causes. People with low self esteem and assertiveness are much more likely to suffer from mental illnesses.
People who focus on the negatives in life all the time only attract more of the same. Just as fat people get fatter and rich people get richer, people fall into habits. These learned habits can be good or bad.
It’s important to realize that feelings and emotions are just states when experiencing anxiety and depression. We have the power to change the way we behave and even feel. Anyone is capable of influencing their subconscious mind so that they can create new positive ways of thinking.
